Everyone is looking to get ahead in their professional field and career generally; It is why they sometimes return to school to gain additional degrees or get trained to acquire relevant certifications as the case may be. However, despite being eminently qualified for several positions which they apply for, they fail to scale the interview hurdle or sometimes aren’t able to gain the position or income they desire and deserve. This is a common situation among several professionals and Ritetrac Consulting Ltd has decided to compile some interview tips that will help every interviewee ace their sessions with their prospective employers and ensure they are remunerated properly.

As a candidate for a role, you must recognize that you need to make a good impression, based on your knowledge and capacity and also the manner you convey the knowledge you possess. Below is a list of tips to help you get your next level position.

  • RESEARCH THE COMPANY AND THE INDUSTRY: Interviewers often test your knowledge of the company you wish to work in; however some go beyond that to ask you about the industry the company operates in. A robust demonstration of the industry, and the position of the company along with opportunities that you believe it can take to benefit the company will go a long way in impressing your interviewers and showing to them that you are willing and able to deliver value to them.
  • PRACTICE YOUR ANSWER TO COMMON INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: There are questions that you can generally expect in an interview, and answering them a bit differently from every other person can help give you an edge. For Example, many interviewers will ask you to tell them about yourself. While this is an avenue to provide basic information about your person and career, it is key to utilize it as an opportunity to express your selling points i.e areas of skill. You can, therefore, mention a skill that you possess, and proceed to share a scenario where you put in the skill to use and delivered a positive result. The mistake many interviewees make is to assume that common interview questions can be answered in basic ways and do not need to be rehearsed. Practice! Practice! Practice!
  • BE ON TIME FOR YOUR INTERVIEW: You do NOT want to be rushing into your interview room because you are almost late. Endeavor to arrive at least 15 minutes ahead of schedule. This not only helps you to calm your self but also ensures that you assemble all the documents and materials you need without forgetting any. Your organization and comportment will help in the delivery of your answers to the questions you may be asked, and this is best done when you are well settled ahead of time.
  • ENGAGE YOUR INTERVIEWERS: Some interviews start off in an adversarial manner and some candidates are erroneously drawn into responding in the same adversarial tone. Rather than appear to be in a tug of war with your interviewer, you want to be on the same side with them, bringing your congenial side to bear. Listen carefully and actively to what they say, including the introductions and show a lot of enthusiasm and energy possibly with a positive compliment about the company. ( e.g I read about your recent project downtown and found the delivery of the work top-notch so I am excited about the prospect to contribute).
  • BE ASSERTIVE AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE INTERVIEW: An interview is not a session to do you a favor. It is as much an opportunity for the company looking to recruit you as much as it is for you. Many people think if they just take anything that comes across from the interviewers, they will be considered. This is wrong. While it is important to be polite and engage your interviewers professionally, it is also key to show that you merit the position based on your education, skills, and experience. Speak confidently as you tie your answers to your accomplishments and ideas that could be useful for the recruiting company.
  • FOLLOW UP AFTER THE INTERVIEW: Most candidates merely sit back, hope that they performed well enough in their interaction with the interviewers and just wait to be called up for employment. This is not best practice. Instead, at the least, you should write Thank You emails to the interviewers for making out time for the interview and documenting some of the positive takeaways you got from the interview. This will help to register your personality in their minds as they make the final decision on whether or not to hire you. Ensure your email is personalized, mentioning the interviewers by their given names. This should be done within 48 hours of your interview. After this, you may contact them if they fail to reach you within the agreed period of time to find out if there are any updates.
